Kitaran uusi ääni : klassinen kitara hyödyntäen efektipedaaleja

Abstract

Työn taustana oli tutkia, miten saada efektipedaalit integroitua klassiseen kitaraan. Idea opinnäytetyön aiheesta syntyi kiinnostuksesta yhdistää efektipedaalien käyttö klassiseen kitaraan luomalla uusia äänimaailmoja soittoon. Opinnäytetyössä sävelsin neljä sävellystä, joissa jokaisessa käytin erilaisia efektipedaaleja. Sävellysprosessin jälkeen toteutin Kitaran uusi ääni -kitarakiertueen, jossa pääsin esittämään sävellykset.

Työni jakautuu neljään eri osioon. Ensimmäisessä osiossa taustoitan live-elektroniikan käyttöä musiikissa sekä perehdyn efektipedaalien historiaan. Efekteistä perehdyn niihin efekteihin, joita käytän sävellyksissäni. Toisessa osiossa avaan sävellysprosessin kulun: mihin efektipedaaleihin ja muihin laitteistoihin päädyin ja miksi, ja miten erityisesti efektipedaalit toivat erilaiset mielikuvat ja tarinat sävellyksiin. Samalla kerron, miten olen pedaalien käytön nuotintanut. Kolmannessa osiossa avaan Kitaran uusi ääni -kiertueen kulun, miten suunnittelin kiertueen ja millaisen vastaanoton kiertue sai. Neljännessä ja viimeisessä osiossa pohdin ja tiivistän opinnäytetyön tuloksia ja miten ideaa voisi tulevaisuudessa kehittää lisää.

Lähdeaineistona käytin kirjallisuutta, joka avaa elektronista ja kokeellista musiikkia. Käytin myös hyödykseni aineistoja, jotka avartavat efektipedaalien ja muiden laitteiden teknistä käyttöä. Nuotinnusta varten tutkin sävellyksiä, joissa pedaalien käyttöä oli merkitty nuotteihin, ja käytin niitä pohjana omille nuotinnuksilleni.

Tulokset osoittivat, että efektipedaalien integroiminen klassiseen kitaraan toi soittimeen uusia äänimaailmoja rikastuttamaan sointiväriä. Yleisön vastaanotto kiertueella oli myönteinen, joka osoittaa tällaisen musiikin luomisen ja jatkotutkimisen kannattavaksi tulevaisuudessa. Sävellyksissä keskityin yhteen efektiin kerrallaan, ja työ antaa mahdollisuuden monipuolistaa efektien käyttöä sävellyskohtaisesti. Koska opinnäytetyö keskittyi efektipedaalien integroimiseen klassiseen kitaraan, se avaa mahdollisuuksia tutkia efektipedaalien käyttöä myös muiden instrumenttien yhteydessä.

The background of the thesis was to investigate how to integrate effect pedals into classical guitar. The idea for the thesis topic originated from an interest in combining the use of effect pedals with classical guitar to create new soundscapes in the performance. In the thesis, I composed four pieces, each incorporating different effect pedals. After the composition process, I carried out the Guitar's New Sound tour (Kitaran uusi ääni), where I had the opportunity to perform the compositions.

My work is divided into four parts. In the first section, I provide the background on the use of live electronics in music and delve into the history of effect pedals. I delve into the effects that I use in my compositions. In the second section, I explain the composition process: which effect pedals and other equipment I chose and why, and how the effect pedals contributed specific imagery and stories to the compositions. I also discuss how I notated the use of the pedals. In the third section, I describe the Guitar's New Sound tour: how I planned the tour and the reception it received. In the fourth and final section, I reflect on and summarize the results of the thesis and how the concept could be developed further in the future.

For my source material, I used literature on electronic and experimental music. I also made use of resources that broaden the technical understanding of effect pedals and other equipment. For the notation, I examined compositions where the use of pedals was marked in the sheet music and used them as a foundation for my own notations.

The results showed that integrating effect pedals into classical guitar brought new soundscapes, enriching the timbre. The audience's response to the tour was positive, which indicates that creating and further exploring this kind of music is worthwhile for the future. In the compositions, I focused on using one effect at a time, and the work allows for expanding the use of effects per composition. Since the thesis focused on integrating effect pedals into classical guitar, it opens up possibilities for exploring the use of effect pedals with other instruments as well.
