The purpose of this thesis was to find practical solutions to improve the lessons learned program within a case company. The case company works in nuclear energy industry, which brings its own challenges to project management. Literature reviews were used to find basic procedures to running successful lessons learned programs. This included compiling working methods of analysing issues within projects and recording them effectively. Successful knowledge transfer is crucial for this program, which means that relationships within an organisation must be working. Creating formal action plans to implement learnings into project organisations practices is important, which must include clear responsibilities for making changes and tracking progress. The case company’s program was studied with a holistic approach analysing the whole project management process and the methods of tracking project progress.
The result of these studies was that the case company’s lessons learned program was not uniform across the organisation. This makes sharing knowledge between departments difficult. The program was also lacking regular and systematic reviews while progress was not racked well. At the same time research suggests that large organisations require formal processes to align actions, and the progress of these actions should be tracked.
Based on these findings, implementing practical solutions were suggested. These included clear goals, regular lessons learned reviews, a uniform way to store lessons learned recordings and formal action processes.
