Abstract

The semiconductor supply chain, a critical backbone of the global technology ecosystem, has faced significant disruptions due to the escalating US-China chip war. This thesis explores the multifaceted impacts of this geopolitical conflict, particularly focusing on the resultant challenges and strategic responses within Europe. The US-China chip war has precipitated a series of economic and strategic shifts, compelling Europe to reassess its dependencies and bolster its semiconductor capabilities. This thesis identifies key disruptions such as restricted access to essential manufacturing technologies and market volatility caused by geopolitical tensions. It examines the European Union's strategic initiatives, including the European Chips Act, aimed at enhancing domestic production, securing supply chains, and fostering innovation. Additionally, the study highlights India's emerging role as a strategic partner for Europe, emphasizing collaborative efforts in research, development, and workforce training to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. Through comprehensive analysis, this thesis provides insights into the evolving landscape of the semiconductor industry and the strategic manoeuvres employed by Europe to navigate and mitigate the repercussions of the US-China chip war.
