The purpose of this final project is to explore different ethical challenges nurses facing in acute care. The aim of this project is to help nurses to increase their understanding of different aspects of ethical challenges in acute care. The study questions are: What are the ethical challenges faced by nurses in acute care? How do nurses face ethical challenges in acute care?
The methodology of this final project is a literature review, based on the 10 research studies selected in a systematic literature review approach. Research articles were selected from professional databases including Medline, CINAHL, and Pubmed.
Results of this final project are grouped into following categories, which illustrates what are the ethical challenges nurse’s experiencing, they are nurses’ limited autonomy in treatments; organizational limitations; conflicts of personal and professional moral principle; underestimation of the contributions of RNs; EDs are not suitable for basic nursing; feeling of chaos and unmanaging situations; prioritization of work duties and obligations as well as all RNs should have a shared value. This approach can be utilized as a tool of nursing education on ethics. And it provides a discussion platform for nurses to learn from other’s experiences, in return to be empowered when encountering ethical dilemmas.
However, this work is not providing an effective solution on how to empower nurses facing ethical challenges more confidently. Further research needed on the solution
