This literature review examines the challenges encountered by healthcare professionals in providing culturally competent care to aging populations within healthcare settings, as well as the essential skills required to provide such care effectively.
The purpose of this study was to explain the challenges that healthcare professionals in delivering culturally competent care to aging populations in the healthcare settings. Aim of the study to generate new knowledge on the barriers and challenges healthcare providers encounter when delivering culturally competent care to aging populations from diverse cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds in health care setting.
This descriptive literature review analysed eight articles selected from the PubMed and CINAHL databases. An inductive content analysis strategy was utilized to address the research question of this bachelor’s thesis. Selected articles were analysed using inductive content analysis.
Then, 27 subcategories, 13 generic categories, and two master categories were generated in the inductive analysis. Two master categories are 1) What challenges do healthcare providers face in providing care to elderly people from diverse backgrounds was generated from seven generic categories and 14 sub categories and 2) What skills do healthcare professionals need to provide culturally competent care to aging populations in healthcare settings? was generated from six generic categories and 13 sub categories.
This study explored the multifaceted challenges of healthcare workers in delivering care to elderly persons from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and the requisite skills for culturally competent care within healthcare organizations. The findings highlight the complexity of delivering care to aging populations in multicultural settings and distinguish between systemic and interpersonal dimensions of culturally competent healthcare delivery.
