Pain Management in the intensive care : Descriptive literature review

Abstract

The purpose of the thesis is to describe pain management methods which are used in the intensive care unit. The aim is to explore the methods of pain management in the ICU and understand Patient’s Perspectives of pain management. This study enhances the knowledge of health care professionals and their students. As a result of exploring the previous studies, we could be able to gather many more details to the one platform. Descriptive literature review is utilized, and article sources are grabbed from reliable databases, including CINAHL and Pub Med. Total of 11 articles have been reviewed, 9 articles were taken directly from CINAHL and PUB MED and 3 of articles were taken as manual search. The data was analyzed by using inductive content analysis to fulfill the answer for the search questions. Nurses have great opportunity to prevent the patients from the pain. Acute pain management in the Intensive Care Unit is crucial. Effective pain management affects the patient to normal or usual condition. In common situations, a popular aspect of pain management is opioids. But alternative medications and management strategies are highly utilized. When exploring the research articles, Multimodal pain regimens (MMPRs) have been utilized for patients who have an acute stage of pain. MMPRs will not activate in some situation such as oral or regional blocks in many parts of the body. In addition, MMPRs are more effective way for the acute pain management.
