Tiivistelmä
Carpal tunnel syndrome is among the most common nerve entrapment disorders affecting the upper extremities. It arises when the median nerve becomes compressed near the wrist, potentially leading to impaired function and disability in the hand and arm. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate effects of manual therapy in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

This bachelor’s thesis is followed by a modified literature review for reviewing and data collection. Databases of PubMed, CINAHL Complete, ScienceDirect, ProQuest Central and Wiley online library have been used. The search terms included carpal tunnel syndrome and manual therapy. The results were filtered within a year range from the start of 2020 to end of 2024 which completes 5 years. The study design was not limited by search.

According to results manual therapy showed benefits for people with carpal tunnel syndrome. Most patients experienced noticeable reduction in pain and improvement in movements especially when combined with techniques like neurodynamic mobilisation and joint mobilisation. While improvements in nerve conduction and grip strength were smaller or varied, the overall outcomes were positive. In some case the results were even similar to those seen after surgery, with effects lasting for several months. Reviewed studies significantly showed manual therapy to be a helpful and effective option for managing carpal tunnel syndrome patients. Results were mostly measured with the association of Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire, visual analog scale, and dynamometer.

This bachelor’s thesis has been submitted into Turnitin system and analysed for plagiarism. Final percentage is 14% that fits the guideline limits.
