Tiivistelmä
This study explores the experiences of black parents and parents of color (BPOC) raising queer children or children who identify as LGBTQ+ in Finland, focusing on the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, culture, and sexual minority identities. The study seeks to answer the question; how do black parents and parents of color, of queer children and youth, navigate the intersecting challenges of their racial /ethnic minority backgrounds and their roles as parents to queer children? What coping strategies do they apply while raising and supporting their children within their own communities and within larger society?

Through qualitative research methods, specifically using thematic analysis, the research highlights how migration, parenthood, societal and communal expectations contribute to heightened stress levels. Findings reveal that BPOC parents face overlapping challenges, including a limited or lacking support, social exclusion, and stigmatization both within broader Finnish society and their own ethnic communities.

Through the lens of intersectionality theory and minority stress theories, the study underscores how compounded disadvantages intensify the emotional and psychological burden on these parents. Despite these challenges, some parents develop their own resilience and coping strategies while raising and supporting their children while simultaneously, navigating systemic barriers. This study calls for more research on the experiences BPOC parents of queer children, in order for social work institutions, organizations and groups to better advocate and develop inclusive and culturally responsive support systems that acknowledge the unique challenges they face. Addressing these issues is essential for fostering equity and social cohesion.
