Maintaining the scalability and robustness of mobile game backends is important in providing continuous user experience, especially in a high-concurrency context. This thesis addresses the question of how to assess and improve the performance of an Akka.NET (actor-model) backend, with an evaluation case study of a mobile interior design game called Decor Society using test automation.
The research utilized Metaplay’s BotClient to replicate actual gameplay interactions and stress test backend components. Our assessment met the goal of testing scalability and highlighted issues such as feed serialization delays, actor bottle necks and limits imposed by API rate limits. To improve reliability and durability of the system overall, solutions such as fire-and-forget messaging, delegation to actors and queuing were implemented.
The results demonstrate that actor-based backends managed with sufficient automation and monitoring can scale and recover from loads, and that this thesis contributes to potential avenues for building able game infrastructures which produce reliable, scalable backend experiences.
