This thesis focuses on implementing Power BI for a case company with multiple data sources and fragmented financial reporting tools. The objective was to develop a proposal for the implementation of Power BI to enhance the financial visibility of the company's Group Accounting Team.
This thesis was conducted using the applied action research approach and qualitative methods for data collection. The data was collected in three rounds through interviews and discussions with the key stakeholders. The first data collection was conducted for the current state analysis, which revealed the strengths and weaknesses of the current reporting systems. The second data collection was collected from the discussions with the key stakeholders as input for building the proposal. The third data collection was gathered in the validation stage, which evaluated the initial proposal via validation discussions with the stakeholders.
The theoretical framework focused on the topics of integration of data sources, design of the data architecture, and implementation of Power BI. The first element was the integration of data sources, which included an analysis of various data sources and their strengths and weaknesses to help determine the most suitable option for the case company. The second element was the design of data architecture, which outlined best practices, including data modelling, integration patterns, and data governance. The last element incorporated guidelines for planning and executing Power BI projects. These elements formed a conceptual framework that guided the proposal for Power BI implementation using the iterative project model.
The outcome of this thesis is a proposal for implementing Power BI for the Group Accounting Team. The final proposal consisted of the steps for Power BI implementation, the project timeline for it, dataset design, dataset planning architecture, and organisational dashboard architecture. The outcomes serve as a guide to the Group Accounting Team when implementing Power BI for enhanced financial reporting.
