This thesis aims to enhance sustainability reporting process for Polarputki Oy. As the steel industry shifts towards more sustainable practices, Polarputki must adapt to market expectations and meet regulations. While the company has invested in sustainability initiatives, challenges remain in assessing and documenting suppliers’ practices. This study aims to gather supplier insights and improve internal reporting processes to strengthen Polarputki’ s overall sustainability performance.
The theoretical part includes the topics related to sustainability and sustainability in the steel industry. The analysis part uses qualitative research methods, focusing on non-numerical data from the case company’s database of internal documents, observations and interviews. This data included environmental product declarations, emission calculations, and other relevant sustainability information.
To address the lack of supplier sustainability documentation, this study developed Supplier Code of Conduct and greenhouse gas questionnaire for suppliers to complete. In addition to this, various policies and certificates were asked. The aim was to obtain a written commitment from suppliers to adhere to ethical principles and to measure their greenhouse gas emissions. By implementing these documents, the company seeks to establish a structured approach to sustainability data collection, ensuring alignment with Polarputki’ s corporate responsibility commitments. Extending sustainability efforts to the supply chain will help build a sourcing process that meets both regulatory requirements and customer expectations. A key achievement of this initiative was the 13-point increase in EcoVadis rating, providing a tangible and concrete measure of the project’s success and progress in sustainability performance.
