Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this functional thesis is to investigate how creative methods within the social services context can support and assist older immigrants in creating a sense of belonging in their new environment. The working life partner of the thesis is Jade, a non-governmental organization supporting the well-being and social integration of specifically older immigrants in Finland. The target group in this research is Farsi and Dari-speaking clients aged 50 and above who have existing knowledge of Jade’s service offering and willingness to participate.
To support older immigrants in building a sense of belonging in their new environment, three art-based workshops were designed, applying creative methods including storytelling, collage and photo reflection on various topics.
Findings suggest that art-based workshops have a role in supporting the well-being and sense of belonging of the target group. The facilitator plays an important role in guiding participants to develop mutual support and connection based on a common cultural background, similarities in their present situation and shared hopes for the future. The creative methods worked as an effective basis for exploring these important matters.
Possible future research topics could be to develop the use of creative methods in enhancing the sense of belonging of immigrant groups in general. This study suggests that creative methods offer a promising intervention for improving the well-being of immigrants.
