Tiivistelmä
This bachelor thesis examined the key factors of higher education institutions that are driving the acceleration of circular economy. Recognizing the limitations of the linear economy model, often named as “take-make-dispose” model, this research investigated the more sustainable approach of circular economy. Through literature research, the key aspects were outlined and their benefits explained. Additionally, this thesis explains a method to measure the circular economy.
Furthermore, this work described the history, the present status as well as the future outlook of the circular economy in the European Union and Finland, to provide an overview on the development of this economy.
Next, three projects, which are following and implementing circular economy principles, partly carried out by the higher education institution Lapland University of Applied Sciences, were described, followed by a reference project carried out by southern European countries.
Finally, this thesis led into an analyzation and comparison of the projects followed by a discussion about the advantages of higher education institutions as accelerators for the transition to a circular economy.
