Tiivistelmä
The case company has identified the need to develop the warehouse operations, as the case company must replace older warehousing systems and a new model of centralized warehousing will be introduced in the future. The warehouse must be prepared for future changes, and the management needs a plan on how to develop the current operations. The objective of this study was to create an action plan for developing warehouse operations.
The research approach of the study was applied action research, which pursued improvement of processes and activities by developing solutions to diagnosed issues. The research was conducted in four phases, beginning with the current state analysis where the operations were described and a summary of strengths and weaknesses was created. In the second phase, this was utilized in the literary review and a conceptual framework was formed with ideas and best practices to solve the weaknesses. The action plan development phase combined the information of the previous phases and development workshops were conducted with the stakeholders to create an initial action plan.
In the last phase, the action plan was validated with the stakeholder managers by reviewing it in a workshop. The feedback received from the workshop was used to improve the action plan to the final form of the action plan.
The final action plan was the outcome of this study and is a six-stage project plan which can be executed to develop the warehouse operations. The action plan contains recommended actions and execution of these actions can be initiated as a development project by the case company. The execution of the actions can solve the identified issues and improve the performance of the operations and prepare the operations for the incoming larger changes.
