dc.description.abstract | This thesis proposes solutions to improve the operational inefficiencies seen in Mexican import and export container terminals through Lean Six Sigma techniques. The study highlights critical areas that impact terminal performance by focusing on Key Performance Indicators such as turnaround time, dwell time, crane utilization, customs clearance time, and Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units processed per day.
The study is approached with the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods, including structured interviews, surveys, and secondary data analysis, concluding that the main inefficiencies are port congestion, customs delays, and outdated workflows. To identify waste and suggest actionable solutions, the study implements the use of the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology, also including the application of different Lean Six Sigma tools.
The study’s findings present how lead times can be decreased with the implementation of process optimization with technology advancements like automation and real-time tracking. Finally, this thesis provides a data-driven framework for the improvement of operational efficiency and increasing Mexican ports' competitiveness in the global trade network. | - |
