Environmental sustainability and making a profit must now come together for the construction industry to tackle the obstacles caused by urban growth and building more infrastructure. Since the sector uses vast amounts of energy, emits a lot of CO₂, consumes many raw materials and creates waste, its transformation is needed to achieve worldwide climate goals.
The study looks at how engineering management drives sustainable efforts in construction projects, with a focus on Europe. While Environmental laws and the European Green Deal are strengthening, the building sector does not yet meet the goals set for long-term decarbonization.
This research uses a survey of 40 engineering managers to highlight what strategies and choices are used for sustainability at the managerial level. The results of the study are meant to fill a gap in understanding how sustainable construction can be managed, by giving actionable information to academics, practitioners and policymakers. This thesis points out that engineering managers play a pivotal role by leading the way to sustainability in the construction industry by integrating various practices that are sustainable and fostering collaborative leadership that helps for the organizational change.
