Change in technology has become the hallmark of the current industry and at present affects the changes in the performance of manufacturing and software operations. This work examines the effect of leadership in project management of technological transitions to uncover how good leadership enhances the organization’s capability to innovate, develop, and retain competitive advantage during the digital transformation.
The study found its roots in a comparative theoretical model of different leadership styles; transformational, adaptive, servant, and change leadership were some of these leadership styles. The methodology is a qualitative multiple case study involving interviews of both manufacturing and software industries. Some key concepts include strategic vision, change management, organizational culture, etc. Thematic analysis was made on the data to obtain leadership practices and challenges for each industry.
Both of these industries require visionary and agile leadership; however, the strategies vary due to technology requirements. Software leaders need to deliver quickly on new ideas, while manufacturing leaders need to ensure the structured way of integrating and operating. The conclusion is that good leadership is as important as it is complex and that tailored approaches to leadership are essential in navigating technological change in the most effective way, and it provides practical recommendations to industry leaders and policymakers in doing so.
