Tiivistelmä
Generative AI tools have become to be widely used across industries, including higher education. Yet, their adoption in educational practices required experimental solutions to address specific subject needs. This thesis aimed to develop practical approaches to improve utilization of generative AI tools in Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in order to improve SCM courses and digital competencies of students.

The study was conducted by using action research methodology. Its data collection and analysis comprised of qualitative research methods including interviews, surveys and onsite observations. The current state analysis focused on examining organizational AI adoption and individuals’ AI skills. Methods such as 5Whys were used to identify the needs of involved faculty and students for using AI. The theoretical framework focused on exploring practical design approaches for incorporating generative AI into course learning activities. Benchmarking against top 10 universities worldwide provided the ideas for recommendations to Metropolia.

The development work focused on generative AI adoption for addressing the identified user needs and piloted two solutions in two SCM courses. The outcome of the thesis includes two proposed approaches for generative AI adoption to address both the needs of the faculty and the students. The outcome also includes recommendations on supportive measures to improve generative AI adoption into educational practice of Metropolia.

The thesis results are expected to improve students’ learning outcomes and overall skills including SCM and digital competences and using AI in an ethical manner, which would enhance their competitiveness as future professionals. Metropolia benefits by getting actionable for generative AI use and upgrading traditional teaching practices through AI-based tools. It should enhance the proposition of Metropolia as a competence center, empower its educational practices, and thus foster realizing Digital Decade Plans in the EU area.
