Tiivistelmä
As global energy demands rise and the call for sustainable development becomes more urgent, optimizing energy systems has never been more critical. This thesis explores the practical effectiveness of the HOMER Pro software in designing optimized hybrid energy systems through two case studies based in Vaasa, Finland: the Meteoria off-grid facility and Building W33 at Novia University of Applied Sciences. These case studies serve as real-world testbeds for assessing HOMER Pro’s capabilities in modelling, simulation, and techno-economic evaluation. The work examines how the software performs when balancing cost, sustainability, and energy efficiency under diverse conditions. Key limitations in its modelling assumptions are also addressed, providing a more realistic view of its applicability in other settings. Ultimately, the findings contribute valuable insight for both academic research and practical energy planning—especially in regions aiming to transition toward more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructures.
