The motivation for this study was the budget constraints while using public clouds for individuals and small businesses. The research aimed to build a private cloud storage system using Raspberry Pi and ownCloud software while also collecting user’s perspective towards public and private through a survey.
The thesis contains a summary of cloud computing, security threats of cloud, comparison of cloud service providers, limitations and benefits of cloud computing. The study consists of two parts, mainly implementation of ownCloud in Raspberry pi and a qualitative survey to find out the opinions of individuals about using public and private cloud storage.
The thesis explored the feasibility of deploying and managing a private cloud storage system and compared it with various aspects of using public cloud storage. The study revealed that buying cloud storage is more secure than using ownCloud. The survey in the later part revealed people are interested in building their own cloud storage but they lack technical knowledge and worry about the security.
