Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this bachelor's thesis was to describe the infection prevention and control strategies for MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection in healthcare settings, and to identify challenges that healthcare professionals faced in implementing these strategies. This study aimed is to produce new knowledge that could be utilized by nurses in improving infection control practices related to MRSA infection in healthcare settings.

A qualitative descriptive literature review was conducted. Scientific articles were collected from CINAHL and MEDLINE databases using systematic search strategies, guided by the PICo frame-work. A total of fifteen peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2024 were selected and analysed using inductive content analysis.

The study results revealed that effective MRSA infection control strategies included proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, environmental disinfection, MRSA screening, and consistent staff training. These approaches were shown to reduce MRSA transmission rates in healthcare settings effectively. However, challenges such as knowledge gaps, time constraints, high workload, inconsistent adherence to infection control guidelines, and lack of institutional sup-port continued to impact the effectiveness of infection control efforts.

This study concluded that MRSA continued to pose a serious threat in healthcare settings due to its resistance mechanisms, environmental persistence, and transmission risk, particularly in healthcare providers who were in direct contact with patients. MRSA prevention depended not only on established infection control measures, but also on addressing persistent challenges.
