The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impact of work stress on the mental and physical health of registered nurses in healthcare services and to identify effective coping mechanisms to reduce work stress. Work-related stress is a significant concern in the nursing profession, where patient safety and care quality depend on nurses’ decisions and actions. Registered nurses are exposed to various stressors, including long working hours, understaffing, high patient loads, and emotionally demanding situations. These stressors compromise nurses’ physical and mental well-being and can negatively affect patient care, job satisfaction, and healthcare system efficiency.
In the thesis, the impact of work stress on the mental and physical health of registered nurses was examined, and effective coping strategies were identified. A literature review method was applied, and the data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. The analysis focused on stress-related outcomes, including burnout, emotional exhaustion, cognitive overload, and stress-related health disorders.
The findings indicated that both organizational and personal coping mechanisms are essential to reduce work stress and promote resilience among nurses. Proactive strategies, such as supportive management, adequate staffing, and stress management interventions, were identified as crucial for maintaining nurse well-being and job performance.
Conducted in collaboration with Savonia University of Applied Sciences, this study contributes to understanding nurse well-being and offers practical insights for healthcare administrators, policymakers, and nursing professionals. The results emphasize the importance of addressing work stress, implementing supportive strategies, and further developing interventions that protect and empower nurses, thereby promoting sustainable, high-quality healthcare.
