Last Mile Delivery by Drones

Abstract

Last-Mile Delivery is a critical and costly part of the distribution chain, providing the final connection to customers. Modern drone technology is viewed as a promising solution, enabling faster delivery, lower costs, and enhanced environmental protection. Research suggests that drones can alleviate the limitations of traditional truck delivery – including traffic congestion, gas and electricity consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions – and enable faster delivery of goods to rural and remote areas. However, there are technical challenges that need to be addressed, including routing optimization, cargo distribution, battery management, data communication, and environmental protection. Companies such as Amazon Prime Air and UPS Flight Forward are also introducing new ordering systems and “flying warehouse” concepts, which are new areas of focus for drone use. In business, the use of drones is expected to increase the efficiency of the entire supply chain, enhance overall customer satisfaction, and promote safe and sustainable operations.
