Government No More : extended literature review on the transformation of public administration to public management through usage of management consultants

Abstract

This thesis investigates public administration, how it came to be and how it was replaced by new public management with the help of management consultants. It will also explore how the future of governance will be after 30 years of new public management. The objective of the thesis is to look existing research to answer these questions. The methodology of the thesis was systematic review of existing literature to answer the key questions. The result showed that despite the extensive research on subject, there is limited evidence addressing role of the management consultants in government. While the literature that exists provides insight into the subject, some of the research is outdated and does not reflect the current situation. There are opportunities for deeper understanding of current governance structures and the role the management consultants had on creating those structures.
