Tiivistelmä
Informal caregivers of people with cognitive decline play an important role in society by enabling their care recipients to live at home as long as possible. However, the caregiving role is associated with stress, physical and emotional strain, and social isolation which can negatively affect caregivers’ quality of life and their caregiving abilities. This is where creative activities come into play. Such activities are recognized to support well-being and strengthen relational connections. This thesis explores how creative activities can be integrated into the caregiving routine so that such practice enhances both caregivers’ and care recipients’ well-being.
The study uses mixed methods design with a qualitative emphasis and incorporates arts-based research approach. The data were collected through a survey and two focus group interviews conducted after the creative activities’ workshops with informal caregivers. The findings show that the participants recognize the importance of creativity in everyday life and often engage in creative practices, but not with their care recipients. Participants mentioned resources limitations as well as caregiving burden as barriers to engaging in creative activities which can be manifested as lack of strength or interest in pursuing such activities.
This research suggests that new policies are needed to support and implement community based creative and artistic practices that acknowledge the importance of respite and self-care for caregivers and relational engagement and social participation for both caregiver and care recipient. To achieve this, healthcare providers and social workers have an important role in promoting and disclosing the benefits of engagement in creative activities so that informal caregivers feel motivated to take part in these activities.
