Tiivistelmä
This research examined how risks are identified in large-scale building construction projects in Sri Lanka and assessed the impact of risk management practices, using Sanken Construction Pvt Ltd as the case company.

The objectives of this research were to identify key risks, including operational, health, and safety risks faced by large-scale building projects in Sri Lanka, and to evaluate the proactive strategies used to mitigate these risks.

A qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews with the project manager, senior civil engineer, and site engineer from Sanken Construction Company Pvt Ltd were conducted to determine logical answers to research questions. Interview responses revealed that building material shortages, supply chain issues, labour shortages, and health and safety issues are the most important risk factors. In addition, a more extensive discussion was held on how to identify, assess, and take proactive mitigation strategies for these risks in practice.

Proactive risk mitigation strategies such as early risk identification, conducting training and awareness workshops, taking steps to prevent hazards, prioritizing health and safety risks, and maintaining a risk register were discussed in depth. Furthermore, interviewees discussed external environmental factors, such as economic and political instabilities that affected building constructions, along with key risk management frameworks.
