Tiivistelmä
This bachelor’s thesis aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge of mental health disorder management and to identify challenges encountered when providing care for elderly patients in nursing homes. The objective was to contribute practical insights that support the development of effective training and policy strategies to improve mental health care in institutional elderly settings.

This study was carried out as a qualitative literature review. Data were collected from ten peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025, selected using systematic search strategies from databases such as PubMed and CINAHL. The studies focused on mental health care practices among nurses working in nursing homes. Inclusion criteria were applied using the PICo framework, and an inductive content analysis approach was used to organize findings into thematic categories.

The findings revealed significant gaps in nurses’ knowledge related to mental health disorders, particularly dementia, depression, and anxiety. Barriers such as insufficient training, limited institutional support, and inadequate educational preparation were prominent. Additionally, systemic, staffing, team collaboration, and patient-related challenges further hindered the delivery of effective care.

The results lead to the conclusion that enhancing mental health education in both undergraduate and continuing nursing programs is crucial. Institutional support must also be improved, particularly through clearer protocols, interdisciplinary collaboration, and increased investment in mental health resources. Addressing these issues can empower nurses to provide higher-quality mental health care for elderly residents in nursing homes.
