The aim of this study is to investigate the meanings given by the mothers related to the photography-based approach in terms of supporting early interaction and attachment. Motherhood represents a profound life transition, encompassing a wide range of emotions and complex mental processes. The mother–child attachment relationship begins to form during pregnancy. A secure attachment develops when the child experiences early interactions that are sensitive, predictable, and responsive to needs in a timely manner during the first years of life. However, this process may be disrupted by factors such as maternal depressive or anxiety symptoms and intergenerational challenges. The formation of a secure mother-child attachment requires the parent's ability to mentalize and co-regulate. These concepts are examined theoretically as part of this study.
This empirical qualitative case study explores a three-phase dialogical process based on photography approach with three mother–infant dyads. The first phase of the process involved photographing the mother and child, followed by a second phase of reviewing the photographs and discussing observations that emerged. The process concluded with a semi-structured interview. To protect participants’ privacy, photographs were not included as research data; however, they were utilized throughout the process as a basis for dialogue.
Findings indicate that photography-based approach can facilitate maternal recognition of personal competencies and strengths, thereby supporting them. Furthermore, such practices may support the self-image of the mother, either by strengthening existing perceptions or by enabling new perspectives through reflective observation of images.
