Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to describe how person-centred care promotes quality of care and well-being of elderly patients in nursing homes. With this information, elderly care can be developed to provide person-centred care that can significantly enhance the quality of life and well-being of elderly patients in nursing homes.

This thesis practise a descriptive literature review to understand how person-centred care impacts the quality of life of elderly patients residing in nursing homes. Keywords like "elderly" or "older people," "nursing home" or "elderly care home," and "person-centred care" or "patient-centred care" were used while searching literature articles. Ten articles written in the English language published between 2015 and 2025 were selected to ensure the use of updated and reliable sources. The articles were then analysed using an inductive content analysis method.

The results of this literature review showed that person-centred care (PCC) improves the quality of life for elderly patients in nursing homes. Care strategies that support trust development, independence and respect for personal choice led to better results. The combination of meaningful activity, support, respectful treatment and patient empowerment and motivation techniques leads to a better quality of life for patients.

Person-centred care also enhances elderly patients’ well-being by fulfilling their emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. The combination of building relationships, active listening, social participation, and emotional or spiritual assistance helps patients develop stronger resilience while decreasing their feelings of loneliness and building their sense of community. The combination of personalised care planning with emotional health support and spiritual connection leads to enhanced well-being among elderly patients in nursing homes.

Overall, a result of the research showed that person-centred care practices enhance the quality of life and well-being of elderly patients in nursing homes. Person-centred care shifts nursing home caregiving from a task-oriented model to Individualised support that focuses on emotional connections and complete patient care. Elderly patients who receive person-centred care experience better quality of life and higher life satisfaction and improved emotional well-being, leading to enhanced overall quality of life during their time in elderly nursing homes.
