Tiivistelmä
This master´s thesis explores how social media affects young adult women´s body image and how art-based activities may empower them to have a more positive body image. Many young women compare themselves with images they see on social media. These images are often filtered and idealized, and women may feel pressure to look perfect. These comparisons can lead to body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. However, making art can help people understand themselves better and feel more confident.

This study used qualitative and art-based research methods. The participants were five young adult women in Oulu, Finland. They participated in three art workshops, including self-portrait painting, clay modeling, and collage making. They were also interviewed before and after the workshops. The data analysis method was thematic analysis, and four themes were found. The results showed that social media often makes young women compare themselves to others. This situation can lower their confidence and can cause body dissatisfaction. While the art workshops helped the participants in exploring their feelings. They could understand themselves better and accept their bodies as they are.

The study shows that art can act as a catalyst for empowerment. Art can provide people with an opportunity to express their feelings and emotions. This way is useful especially for those who cannot express themselves verbally. These findings show that art-based activities can be used as a way to promote self-acceptance and positive body image among young adult women.
