Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study was to describe the positive experiences and overcoming obstacles of patients with stomas. This literature review aimed to produce new knowledge on this subject that has been connected with the experiences of stoma patients and stoma care.

This study was conducted while utilising the method called descriptive literature review approach and the methodological approach called qualitative. Data were accumulated from CINHAL, PubMed and Wiley Online Library databases. All fourteen articles were reviewed by the inductive content analysis method.

The results were formed into two main categories: “The positive factors that the stoma patients can experience” and “The obstacles that the stoma patients encounter”. Acco- rdingly, the first main category indicated the experiences of patients related to the health care assistance, the impact of the family and social assistance, and attitudinal and daily routine enhancement. Nevertheless, the second main category indicated the experienc- es related to stoma life, recreational, comprehensible, health care-related issues, and psychological disturbances. Consequently, the generic categories were difficult to sep arate, and a close interrelationship among them was acknowledged.

The results demonstrate both aspects of patients’ experiences: positive adaptation and significant obstacles with stomas, while emphasising the multifaceted nature of adjustment. This review may help clarify a basis for future research, healthcare policy improvements, and clinical practices that intend to enhance the well-being, quality of life, autonomy of stoma individuals, particularly in hospitals and home-care settings, by guiding the nurses to recognise and respond to patients’ psychological, spiritual, and practical needs with greater empathy and cultural sensitivity.
