Applying stoic philosophy to nursing ethics : An autoethnographic approach

Abstract

This is an autoethnographic thesis that explores the application of Stoicism and the effectiveness of philosophy as a framework for ethical enhancement within the nursing profession. This is predicated on the idea that the traditional, rules-based code of ethics provides an effective guide to the profession but often negates the psychological challenges that are faced by nurses. Therefore, Stoicism can be an effective tool in tackling prevalent issues that arise in practice such as work burnout and moral discomfort/distress. Autoethnography, a self-narrative methodology, was employed in this thesis. The study drew on reflective journals and diary entries by a student nurse through a variety of work practicums in the clinical environment.

The experiences drawn for these journals demonstrated that intentional practice of Stoic cardinal virtues- wisdom, justice, courage and temperance paired the dichotomy of control present a relevant framework for navigating moral dilemmas that are inevitable in the nursing profession. Emotional response management and resilience were also enhanced through the deliberate practice of these virtues. By showing that an ancient philosophy can offer a vital, self-guided approach to professional well-being and equip nurses with the internal resources necessary to excel in demanding and complex settings, this research adds to the discourse on ethics in healthcare.
