Globalization has had major impacts on SMEs. SMEs play an important role in the growth of the economy, creation of employments, and developments of technologies. This is particularly important where countries like Nepal are concerned. This study seeks to determine the impact that globalization has on the growth and functioning of SMEs in Nepal utilizing the qualitative study methodology. Resource Based Theory of the company, the Theory of Networks, and the Institutional Theory were employed as the theories that governed the study.
Findings reveal that globalization presents opportunities for expanded markets, technological development, and knowledge transfer. On the other hand, SMEs are faced with a challenge of limited resources, competition, and institutional issues. A strong network and institutions play an important role in overcoming these difficulties. The previous point clearly reveals that globalization presents opportunities as well as difficulties, thereby requiring efficient use of resources to improve SME competitiveness.
