Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines the process of creating a MetaHuman character with a custom outfit for a project. Epic Games’ MetaHumans simplify the notoriously difficult and time-consuming task of producing realistic digital humans. This project-based thesis documents the complete character creation process, from initial concept to a fully realized character ready for animation. It discusses the challenges encountered, as well as the solutions and workarounds developed, with the aim of evaluating whether the process was succesful and appropriate for character creation.
A secondary aim of this thesis was to assess the usefulness of MetaHumans for smaller teams with limited resources. This question was partly addressed through research on existing MetaHuman uses, their strengths and limitations, and the extent to which they could be modified. Personal experience gained from working with a small team during the project was also used to further answer this question.
The character examined in this thesis was created for a historical virtual reality (VR) experience that allows users to experience the Kerava Old Road in 1936. The project was conducted in collaboration with Kerava museum services.
