The Challenges and Factors in Nursing Care for Older Adults with Dementia and Alcohol Misuse

The purpose of this literature review was to describe nursing care of older adults with dementia and alcohol misuse. The aim was to study sought knowledge of the factors and challenges encountered by staff working with older residents who have a history of alcohol use and dementia.
A qualitative study was measured by systematic search in CINAHL and PubMed databases. These databases were used to undertake a literature review. The inclusion criteria were used by using the Boolean operators and PICo framework and all the abstracted written circulated in English year 2015 - 2025 were included in the review. Inductive qualitative content study was applied to examine the data and identify recurring themes and patterns.
The outcomes identified that factors affecting nursing care for older adults with dementia and alcohol misuse included patient and family related factors, systemic and diagnostic factors affecting care delivery, and treatment and care adaptation factors. Furthermore, identified the main challenges in nursing care were related to caregiverrelated challenges in providing care, patient related challenges in care delivery, and difficulties in assessment and diagnosis caused by overlapping symptoms of dementia and alcohol misuse.
The final findings suggest that considerable training, improved evaluative skills, professional collaboration, and flexibility are critical for effective care. The study shows the position of person-centered flexible methods to meet the complex wants of this vulnerable group.
