Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to outline the role of registered nurses in supporting mental health among elderly patients in health facilities. In directing a review of descriptive literature, it aimed to produce new knowledge and gather more understanding on how registered nurses contribute and explore new assessments in supporting mental health among elderly patients in health facilities.

This data was collected among PubMed and CINAHL databases; 1314 articles were initially found. There were 89 studies eliminated that completed an initial assessment procedure found on the title and 36 articles abstract review resulted in the rejection of more articles after utilizing the criteria for exclusion and inclusion. In using the PRISMA process flow chart method there were 15 articles selected to answer the research questions. What is the role of registered nurses in supporting mental health among elderly patients in the health facilities and what are the challenges in registered nurse face in supporting mental health among elderly patients in health facilities. The method of inductive content analysis was then applied for examining these chosen articles.

Elderly individuals have a significant impact on the communities. Their experiences often make them key sources of guidance, mentorships and support to the younger generation. But we often overlook the aspect of the overall wellbeing of our elderly. Europe's ageing population is a prolonged progression that started many years ago. This progression is evident in changes in the population's age structure, showing a growing proportion of elderly individuals, alongside a decreasing proportion of working-age individuals within the overall population.

This study concludes that assessing mental health, engaging in regular physical exercises, maintaining strong social connections and participating in meaningful activities are important in promoting mental wellness in older adults. At the same time, family members, relatives, caregivers and health worker professionals, especially registered nurses making a significant role in offering care, compassion and attention needed to support the mental well-being among elderly patients.
