Training and Development to Overcome Language Diversity Challenges in Finnish IT Workplaces : a Study on Communication, Inclusion, and Language Barriers in Multilingual IT Teams in Finland

Abstract

This thesis examines how Finnish IT workplaces can deal with language-related issues and enhance communication and inclusion in multilingual teams with the assistance of Training and Development (T&D). Data were gathered using a qualitative method by interviewing employees and managers. The results indicate that language barrier impacts the daily communications, participation, and the feeling of belonging among employees even in situations where English is the primary language of working. There are several organisations that do not have well developed training programmes and employees tend to use informal methods of communication. The paper emphasizes that formal T&D programs, including language courses or communication seminars, are necessary to facilitate the work of multilingual teams. It finds that language diversity must be dealt with as an organisational issue to improve cooperation and build more inclusive workplaces
