The number of orthopaedic surgeries performed on elderly patients has increased globally. Prolonged bed rest after surgery may increase the incidence of various complications, consequently affecting hospital stay, healthcare costs, and postoperative recovery. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of early mobilisation on the postoperative recovery of elderly orthopaedic patients. Data were gathered through searches of PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, and manual searches, based on studies published between 2016 and 2023. Boolean operators ("AND" and "OR") were applied, and screening procedures followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A total of 14,168 records were identified, of which 10 studies met the predefined inclusion criteria.
The results showed that early mobilisation has multiple benefits, including reduced length of hospital stay, lower incidence of postoperative complications, decreased pain levels, improved walking ability, better quality of life, and lower hospitalisation costs. Furthermore, patient education and family support were identified as important facilitating factors for the successful implementation of early mobilisation.
This study indicates that early mobilisation is safe and effective for postoperative elderly orthopaedic patients. It is recommended that nurses integrate early mobilisation into routine postoperative care and encourage patients to participate actively. Further study on long-term outcomes and patient education methods is recommended.
