Näöntutkijaksi netissä : verkko-oppimateriaalia näöntutkimustesteistä

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli luoda Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun optometrian opiskelijoille suomenkielinen apuväline näöntutkimustestien opiskeluun, sillä näöntutkimustesteistä on vaikeasti löydettävissä suomenkielistä oppimateriaalia. Työnä toteutettiin verkkokurssi Moodle-oppimisympäristöön, johon koottiin oppimateriaalia opiskelijoille teetetyn kyselyn perusteella vaikeimmiksi koetuista aiheista. Oppimateriaali luotiin sellaiseksi, että se on ymmärrettävää opiskelijoille, jotka opiskelevat aihetta ensimmäistä kertaa. Oppimateriaali on verkossa helposti saatavilla yhdeltä sivustolta. Moodleen rakennetun oppimateriaalin lisäksi opinnäytetyö koostuu raportista, jossa kuvaillaan projektin etenemistä ja verkkokurssin rakennetta.

Opiskelijoille suunnatulla kyselyllä haluttiin selvittää, mitkä näöntutkimustestit koettiin hankalimmiksi oppia tai ymmärtää niiden opiskelun alkuvaiheessa ja minkälaista materiaalia opiskelijat toivoisivat lisää opettajien luentojen lisäksi. Hankalimmiksi koettiin skiaskopia, ristisylinteri ja bichrome balance -testi, jotka valikoituivat oppimateriaalin kolmeksi eri oppitunniksi. Oppimateriaalissa on hyödynnetty opiskelijoiden toiveiden mukaisesti video- ja kuvamateriaalia yhdistettynä asiatekstiin. Oppitunneilla käsitellään testien perusteita sekä niiden tekemistä vaiheittain. Jokaisen oppitunnin lopussa on tehtäväosio, jonka avulla opiskelija pystyy kartoittamaan osaamistaan monivalintakysymysten kautta.

Verkkokurssia testasi ryhmä optometrian opiskelijoita, jotka olivat viimeisimpinä opiskelleet kurssilla käsitellyt aiheet. Opiskelijat tutustuivat oppitunteihin ja vastasivat kyselylomakkeeseen, jossa oli kysymyksiä verkkokurssin yleisilmeestä, toimivuudesta ja hyödyllisyydestä oppimisen tukena. Opiskelijoiden antaman palautteen perusteella verkkokurssiin tehtiin parantavia muutoksia.

Näöntutkiminen on optikon ydinosaamista ja kuuluu jokaiseen työpäivään. Näöntutkimustestien teorian ymmärtäminen ja yhdistäminen käytäntöön voi olla aluksi hankalaa. Tässä työssä luodussa oppimateriaalissa kuvilla ja videoilla on pyritty tukemaan tekstiä ja helpottamaan asian ymmärtämistä. Työ on ajankohtainen, sillä opetus muuttuu yhä enemmän verkon kautta tapahtuvaksi. Verkossa oleva tieto on opiskelijoiden saatavilla missä ja milloin vain.

The purpose of this thesis was to create a helpful guide in Finnish for optometry students at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, because there is only a little Finnish literature about eye examinations available. The purpose was to implement an online course in a virtual learning environment Moodle. The material for the online course was limited to three different parts according to the students’ feedback from the inquiry about what were the most difficult subjects at the beginning. The material in Moodle was made so that it is easy to understand when the subject is learned for the first time. Online course is made in internet so it is available everywhere and regardless of the time. The thesis consists of a Moodle online course and the report of making of Moodle online course.

With the inquiry the intention was to sort out the most challenging tests to understand and learn at the beginning. The students were also asked what kind of material they were willing to have alongside teachers' lectures. The tests that were considered the most challenging and were chosen for the online course were retinoscopy, cross cylinder technique and bichrome balance test. The online course has three different lessons where each test is presented from the basics to the closer demonstration with videos and pictures. At the end of each lesson there is a testing part where students can identify their skills about the subject with multiple-choice questions.

The online course was tested with one of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences optometry classes which had studied the subjects of the online course most recently. Students scanned through the online course and responded to our inquiry about the online course’s overall appearance, functionality and usefulness for learning. The improvements on the online course were made according to the feedback from the inquiry.

Eye examination is a big part of opticians’ daily basis at work. The theory of an eye examination might be difficult to understand and combine with practice at the beginning. The pictures and videos are intended to support the text in the online course, which will help to understand the subject better. The thesis topic is current because teaching will be increasingly online-based. When the information is on the Internet it is available anytime and anywhere for the students to access.
