The purpose of this thesis is to study the motivational factors of Ikea Espoo logistics employees during COVID-19. The aim of this study is to investigate why and how COVID-19 has affected the motivation of Ikea Espoo logistics workers to determine these factors and to develop suggestions how the motivation could be improved.
The rapid spread of the corona disease has caused damage to many large and small companies around the world. Ikea also became one of the major companies that suffered losses. Ikea had to close many stores all around the world. Ikea has made many innovations and changes in order to improve employees' motivation and commitment to the company during COVID-19.
Since the subject of the research is on the employees, as a research method qualitative research method was used in this study. The interviews were linked to matrix group and logistics workers. The target group was interviewed with open-ended questions about their personal experiences regarding motivation at work after COVID-19 started to spread.
After gathering data from research and interviews, the results of the survey showed that after the corona epidemic started, some of the employees did not get the enough information in the beginning about what they should do. Team leaders and managers didn’t give clear direction to the workers. Because of the lack of communication, the employees lost their motivation which beringed bad results for the company also.
The research and data analytics showed that internal communication should be increased, and organization should allow even more flexibility for supervisors and managers. Supervisors and managers also should allow to workers even more flexibility. Research results have shown also that in such extraordinary situations, team leaders should play a major role in order to keep motivation for good workflow. On the other hand, remote work has had good impact on employee’s motivation working from home, being close to family and do the work gives them better motivation.
