This thesis discusses the challenges of creative industry's cultural export to Russia. The purpose is to highlight the challenges that companies, and organizations have experienced in Northern Ostrobothnia region. The concept of cultural export is considerably broad and covers a wide variety of forms of co-operation. In general, cultural export refer to the international trading of cultural industry organized in various ways and with different starting points and objectives.
The creative industry employs a very diverse group of professionals whose work is based on creativity. The economic importance of the creative industry is expected to grow in the future.
The thesis is delivered as qualitative research. It utilizes thematic interviews as the primary data collection method. Five interviewees participated in the study, representing five different companies/organizations. The knowledge base gives the reader an understanding of the current state of cultural export and their perceived challenges.
Based on the research results, companies encounter various challenges and problems in export and co-operation in Russia. According to companies and organizations in Northern-Ostrobothnia, the most considerable challenges were strategical and operational challenges, and challenges related to Russian culture and business environment.
Thesis is commissioned by the CULTA project. CULTA is a cross-border co-operation project between Finland and Russia. Their mission is to strengthen the competence and connections for businesses in creative industries between Finland and Russia. CULTA is interested in learning about the current challenges in cultural export between the Northern Ostrobothnia regions and Russia. Commissioner will use the findings to develop the preconditions for cultural export between Finland and Russia.
