Tiivistelmä
Psychiatric placement is known to cause nursing students stress and anxiety. Clinical placements are especially demanding for culturally and linguistically diverse students who face additional challenges such as communication and adaptation difficulties.
Theoretical framework of this thesis includes overview of existing literature about nursing student experiences of psychiatric placement, placement challenges specific for international nursing students, nursing education in Finland, psychiatric placement environment and means to improve psychiatric placement.
The purpose of the thesis was to measure the degree of international nursing students’ experiences about psychiatric placement. The aim of the thesis was to provide the participating Universities of Applied Sciences with current information about international students’ experiences of psychiatric placement.
This thesis is a descriptive quantitative study using an online questionnaire with multiple choice and Likert scale questions. The research was conducted in Helsinki Metropolitan area, Finland, by gathering and analyzing information from international nursing students of four Universities of Applied Sciences: Laurea, Metropolia, Arcada and Diaconia.
The sample size of the study was 34 students. The results of the study show that the degree of experience that international nursing students get from their psychiatric placement is neither positive nor negative. The findings of this study reveal the areas for possible improvement, with the aim to make the experience of psychiatric placement better for international nursing students. Further studies are needed to describe the experience of students in detail by conducting qualitative research on the topic.
