This thesis is a learning diary for ten weeks concerning event first aid coordinator’s work in the Finnish Red Cross Helsingin ja Uudenmaan Piiri. The objective is to find out what makes the first aid coordinating as challenging as the former coordinator has expressed. The purpose of this thesis is to improve in small steps the first aid arrangements for the events which the preparedness department in FRC HUP is participating. Makin a learning diary it is possible to develop a sufficient way to organize an event first aid in the area of FRC Helsinki and Uusimaa. The report aims to provide a clear picture of the operation and includes development ideas for the department's job description and operations.
The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on the work of volunteer first aiders and organizing it. I’m looking at my work from several different points of view to increase the understanding of the importance of voluntary work in event first aid. At the same time, I will make notations of how the current situation could be improved. I verify statistics, literature, and a survey.
After ten weeks learning diary, I can say that there were too many tasks going on. The volunteers need more information, more encouragement, and they appreciate that they get their own opinion out there. The groundings of organizing event first aid needs renewal and that work has started now. When the event first aid coordinator can leave the minor events to the local departments, the coordinator has better opportunity to take care of other tasks and the work overload will ease. Some new tools such as a risk assessing tool shall be taken into use and data of first aid is going to be gathered in a way that benefits further research.
