Improving the ships basic design processs by applying the Lean philosophy

Abstract

Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää laivan perussuunnitteluprosessin nykytilan ongelmakohtia ja niiden aiheuttamaa turhaa työtä, sekä selvittää Lean-filosofian keinojen sovellettavuutta näiden ongelmien poistamiseksi. Prosessin sisältämä turha työ heikentää niin suunnitteluprojektin tehokkuutta kuin myös henkilöstön motivaatiota, joka puolestaan saattaa vaikuttaa alentavasti työn laatuun. Siten opinnäytetyö pyrkii myös jatkuvan parantamisen toteuttamiseen.

Kehitystyölle luotiin teoreettinen viitekehys perehtymällä laadunhallintaan ja tehtyyn tutkimukseen Lean-filosofian soveltuvuudesta suunnittelualalle. Toimeksiantajaorganisaation suunnitteluprosessissa koetut ongelmakohdat ja turha työ tunnistettiin analysoimalla henkilöstöltä haastatteluilla kerättyä aineistoa ja muodostamalla niistä selkeitä teemoja.

Tutkimusmateriaalin havaintojen perusteella suurimmat haasteet keskittyvät projektitapoihin, lähdetietoihin, henkilöiden eroihin ja työkaluihin. Tulokset olivat yhdenmukaisia työn teoreettisen osan kanssa, ja näiden perusteella työn lopputuloksena oli ehdotus keskittyä suunnittelutehtävien aloittamisedellytysten varmistamiseen sekä projektikäytänteiden kehittämiseen.

The objective of this thesis was to find out the problem areas of the current state of the ship basic design process and the unnecessary work they cause, as well as to find out the applicability of Lean philosophy methods to eliminate these problems. The unnecessary work contained in the process weakens the efficiency of the design project as well as the motivation of the personnel, which in turn may have a degrading effect on the quality of the work. Therefore, the thesis also strives to implement continuous improvement.

A theoretical reference framework was created for the development work by studying the quality management and the research conducted on the applicability of the Lean philosophy to the design industry. Problem areas and unnecessary work experienced in the design process of the client organization were identified by analyzing the material collected from the personnel through interviews and forming clear themes from them.

Based on the findings of the research material, the biggest challenges focus on project practices, source data, human behavior, and tools. The findings were consistent with the theoretical part of the work, and based on these, the result of the work was a suggestion to focus on ensuring the preconditions for starting design tasks, as well on improving the project practices.
