The goal of this work is to move a small, well defined part of a R&D (Research and Development) process into a more efficient realm by using automation, collaboration and information aggregation. This study concentrates on possibilities of optimizing internal hardware design processes of a single R&D intensive technology company. The results of this study are highly company specific, but may help other moderate size technology companies to choose their approach to PDM (Product Data Management).
Developing new technology takes time and money, and to get the best results, R&D processes should work as efficiently as possible. The problem is that there is often evolutionary burden in design processes that may manifest as unnecessary manual work.
This study set out to find these hidden inefficiencies by interviewing several design engineers in different parts of the organization. The question was presented as an imaginary tool that could help them to complete their tasks more efficiently. Feature requests were collected together and analysed as requirements. Finally selected features were implemented as a working prototype.
Rapid prototyping was used to implement a web-application using open source framework. Results of the prototype reviews and the
improvement round that followed point to a solution where this prototype will be further developed. The goal is to make it a tool to help the organization to move into full PDM system in the near future.
