Tiivistelmä
China is a vast country with thousands of opportunities. In the recent years it has gained the position of second largest economy of the world with its rapid economic growth. The opening up, economic development, a richness of resources, remarkable foreign investment and a positive business climate has guaranteed many opportunities in China. The commissioner of this thesis is an Oulu-based startup company in the field of e-commerce. The company is already importing home decorating accessories from the United States, and it is interested in finding business opportunities from China. In this thesis the aim is to carry out a research on how importing process from China takes place and in addition a research to find business partners, as wholesalers and fairs held in China, was made.
The research methodology was qualitative and had qualities of a desktop research. The empirical data was collected by interviews; one open interview, one e-mail interview and some correspondence by e-mails. Both electronical and literature sources were used.
The main results were that finding and bonding connections to China is time consuming process. The importer has to have knowledge from different areas and need to be aware of the documentation used in international trade. Regarding payment methods, most often used method in trade from China is telegraphic transfer and divided payment, for example 30 % deposit and 70 % against the original Bill of Lading. Sea transportation is the most common delivery method used and costs of importing are not only the price of goods, but also comprise the transportation costs, loading and unloading, insurance, customs duty and value added tax. The importer also has to calculate the costs of travel and accommodation while meeting with the local partners.
