Oulu All Star Big Band -projekti Big Band Goes Heavy

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni aihe on Oulu All Star Big Bandin projekti Big Band Goes Heavy. Projektin solistina oli suomalaisesta Teräsbetoni-yhtyeestä tunnettu laulaja Jarkko Ahola. Työhöni liittyy 13.3.2010 Oulun kaupunginteatterilla esitetty konsertti, joka oli yksi projektin keikoista ja samalla opinnäytetyöni taiteellinen osuus Oulun seudun ammattikorkeakoululle.

Olen harrastanut big bandissa soittamista yhtä kauan kuin piano-opintoni ammattikorkeakoulussa ovat kestäneet. Ajattelin, että voisin käsitellä aihetta, koska minulla on big bandista melko paljon kokemusta. Samalla minulla olisi mahdollista syventää tietojani aiheesta sekä käsitellä julkisesti OASBB:n (Oulu All Star Big Band) projektia sekä siihen liittyvää ohjelmistoa. Työssäni käsiteltävä materiaali koostuu kirjoista, internetlähteistä, haastattelusta sekä heavy-jazzsovituksista, joita bändillemme oli tehty. Työni informatiivisessa osiossa tarkastelen big bandin syntyhistoriaa, oman orkesterimme toimintaa sekä ison orkesterin harjoitteluprosessia komppisoittajan näkökulmasta.

Komppisoittajan rooli big bandissa poikkeaa jonkin verran puhallinsektioiden roolista. Uusia sovituksia soitettaessa on komppisektion jatkettava sovittamista harjoitusvaiheessa kun taas puhaltimille tarkoitetut osuudet on tarkoitettu soitettavaksi tarkan nuottikuvan mukaan yksittäisiä soolo-osuuksia lukuun ottamatta. Koska heavy-projektin kappaleet oli myös äänitettävä levylle, vaati harjoitteluprosessi runsaasti omaa sekä koko orkesterin harjoitusaikaa ja täsmällistä työtä, mikä ei muissa bändin projekteissa aina ole ollut mahdollista. Opinnäytetyön taiteellinen osuus sai työssäni melko vähän huomiota, ja tulin siihen tulokseen, ettei konsertti poikennut tavallista korkeatasoisempia solisteja lukuun ottamatta muista Oulu All Star Big Bandin keikoista. Orkesterilla on ollut suhteellisen laadukkaita keikkapuitteita aktiivisen markkinoinnin, big band -yhdistyksen ja suuren kokoonpanonsa ansiosta. Lisäksi bändin maine on kasvanut ahkeran työskentelyn, keikkojen ja mielenkiintoisten, rajoja rikkovien projektien ansiosta.

Tietoa antavaa, suomenkielistä materiaalia löytyi aiheesta melko vähän. Tästä voisi vetää johtopäätöksen, että esimerkiksi opetuskäyttöön tarkoitettu big band -kirjallisuus on verrattain harvinaista. Suomalainen big band on paljon nuorempi käsite kuin Pohjois-Amerikasta 1930-luvulla yleistynyt orkesterimuoto, joten uudelle informaatiolle olisi kysyntää myös omalle kielelle käännettynä.

The subject of this thesis is Oulu All Star Big Band´s (OASBB) project Big Band Goes Heavy. The solist of the project was a Finnish heavy singer Jarkko Ahola. The work is related to a concert organized at Oulu City Theatre (Saturday 13th March 2011). The concert was one of the heavy project´s gigs, and an artistic part of the thesis at Oulu university of applied sciences.

I have been playing in a big band for five years, as long as my studies have lasted. I chose this subject because of having experience of it. At the same time, a possibility to increase my knowledge of big band playing and publicly talk about OASBB´s project and its repertoire. The material used in the thesis is collected with the help of books, internet, an interview and the “heavy-jazz” arrangements made for the band. In the informative part of the thesis the history of big band era, Oulu All Star Big Band´s activity and the rehearsal project of a large ensemble from the view of a comp player (pianist) are studied.

The role of a comp player is quite different from a role of a brass section´s member. When playing new arrangements, the comp section usually keeps on arranging the pieces during the rehearsals, while the brass section´s notes are usually written out. The practicing process took more time and it was more intensive than OASBB´s other projects because of the recordings of the Big Band Goes Heavy album (Feb 2011). The artistic part of the thesis is not a very essential subject in the work. The concert itself did not differ much from the big band´s other performings with the exeption of guest soloists who were one among the best jazz musicians in Finland. Usually OASBB has relatively good quality conditions for performances thanks to active marketing of the band, and the large orchestral composition. The big band´s reputation has grown which would not have occurred without hard working and ground breaking projects.

It was quite difficult to find Finnish material of the big band composition. I came to the conclusion that informative material intended, for example for educational purposes is not available enough. Finnish big band is a much younger concept than the one born in North America in the 1930`s. That is why also new Finnish literature on the subject would urgently be needed.
