Tiivistelmä
This bachelor’s thesis was written to find whether customer base exists in Japan for a Finnish product, Valkee Bright Light Headset. Japanese people’s preferences and opinions about the most effective marketing and sales channels for the device were studied. Japanese people’s general opinions about Valkee Bright Light Headset and what they consider appropriate price for the product were some of the main questions.

The need for the thesis came from Valkee Ltd. The company was looking for new business opportunities abroad for their product: Valkee Bright Light Headset. A retailer had been found in the beginning of 2012 for the product from Japan, but some friction had been discovered in the sales. Therefore the time could not have been better to investigate above matters more thoroughly when the autumn and winter 2012 was approaching.

Method of the research was chosen to be quantitative and the survey was to be implemented at place in Japan during three weeks’ time at the end of autumn 2012. The survey was executed successfully and rest of the work: theory, results and analyzing part were finalized in Finland. At the end, researchers own observations and experiences from “the land of rising sun” were reflected to the research results. There are also printed literature and electronic sources used, but the most relevant data presumably comes from the research results gathered in Japan.

Based on survey results, the market base for Valkee Bright Light Headset was found from Japan. For this reason the correct methods of marketing and selling needed to be investigated in order to know how to continue the business. According to the results, electronic marketing and selling channels showed their strength by being the most popular technique to bring Valkee Bright Light Headset to people’s awareness. Other valuable advises were received from Japanese respondents on the research journey about Valkee’s design, functions and adjustment possibilities.
