Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to increase understanding of export procedures directed at France and especially the capital city of Paris. The commissioner of the thesis was a Finnish consulting company interested in expanding their services to France by finding cooperation partners there. Therefore the commissioner was aiming to gain knowledge of international business, internationalization, export operations and French national culture. However, the main target of interest for the commissioning company was in receiving direct feedback from Paris based chambers of commerce, export promotion organizations and industry organizations. This preliminary study enables further research on the Paris as a target market.
A desktop research was conducted in order to approach the objective of the research. The information sources employed in this study mainly consisted of literature, electronic sources and publications. Additionally, a qualitative research with characteristics of an action-based research was performed to support the desktop research. The qualitative research was conducted by first contacting and then interviewing the most potential cooperation partners in the target area. By combining the information gained from the desktop research and the information received from the qualitative research, one obtains a manifold picture and a deeper understanding of the French culture of how to conduct business with them.
The results of the desktop study yielded an assemblage of facts about the aspects of international business, exporting procedures and France as a target country. However, especially the cultural aspects were chosen to support the results obtained from the quantitative research. Some topics of the theory discussed in this research were chosen to rationalize the negative interest of the French contacts. The quantitative research suffered from low response rate, which could be to some extent explained with French cultural characteristics and a too direct method of approach.
This research provides the commissioning company and the reader with preliminary information on the Paris target market. Therefore, this research should be followed by a more comprehensive qualitative research emphasizing the differences between the two cultures. The research on cultural differences is never fully completed, so one must educate himself on a continuous basis.
