Tiivistelmä
The emergence of covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent implementation of various strategies to manage the pandemic had a significant impact on the mental well-being of nursing students and nursing education. Subsequently, nursing students faced several challenges because of the abrupt switch to remote learning, cancellation of clinical practices, and postponement or cancellation of simulations. The purpose of this thesis was to describe how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the mental well-being of nursing students based on a literature review. The aim was to identify areas where educational institutions can create better supportive interventions for the mental well-being of nursing students in case of a similar pandemic in the future.
This thesis was conducted by means of a literature review as a research method. The data for this thesis were retrieved from two reliable online databases, EBSCOhost (CINAHL) and PubMed. The selection of literature was based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six articles were selected for this study, and the data was analyzed using inductive content analysis.
The findings of this study indicated that the prevalence of psychological issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the abrupt shift to remote learning, had a negative impact on the mental well-being of nursing students. The findings further indicated that nursing students experienced anxiety, depression, fear, and loneliness and the learning environment at home was extremely challenging during the pandemic. In conclusion, the mental well-being of nursing students across different continents has been impacted negatively during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the factors described above.
Future studies could explore into the post-pandemic Impact on nursing students' mental well-being across various continents. further studies could also explore the coping mechanisms that nursing institutions across different continents have adopted and or developed in the event of a similar pandemic in the future.
